Book 38 is The Housekeeper and the Professor by Ogawa Yoko. This was my favorite book from my Japanese post-modern lit class last semester. The story just really stayed with me and the characters were so down to earth and real. Also had the least amount of angst of any of the books we read. It is about a housekeeper who begins working for a math professor who was in a car accident and can’t remember anything beyond the last 80 minutes of his life.
I like that this book looks at the traditional family and deconstructs it. There are no strong male role models in this book. The only man present is the Professor, who can’t be strong because of his memory. It just is a book that makes me really happy and I love it lots. :3
